A PSALM FOR DARK DAYS

  1. What are some “dark times” that people go through?
  2. In v1-4 David uses the picture of a shepherd caring for his sheep to describe what God does for us.
    1. What images are used?
    2. What reality is behind each image?
    3. Rewrite v1-4 using images from our day.
  3. Is it possible to experience the blessings of v1-3 whilst we are going through the darkness of v4?
  4. In v5-6 the picture changes from God as our Shepherd to God as our host.

  5. Read Romans 8v28-39
    1. How do these verses expand our understanding of Psalm 23v5,6?
    2. What does Paul say about God’s goodness?
    3. What is “the good” that God works for us?
    4. What are our enemies, and how does God bless us in the face of these enemies?
    5. How does Paul express David’s conviction that we “will dwell in the house of the Lord forever”?
  6. Psalm 23 expresses calm confidence in dark times. Where does David get his confidence from?  Is it possible for us to have the same confidence?  How?
