SMALL GROUP DISCUSSION QUESTIONS
TEXT: 1 Kings 21 THE ELIJAH SERIES
DATE: Wednesday 13th November 2019
1. Read 1 Kings 21v1-6
a. How does King Ahab’s request sound reasonable?
b. Read Leviticus 25v23 & Numbers 36v7. What do we learn God’s law about how the Israelites were to treat the land?
c. Read Deuteronomy 17v18-20. What was expected of the kings of Israel? What, then, would have been expected of King Ahab in this situation?
d. Why could Ahab’s offer seem tempting to Naboth?
e. How would you describe Ahab’s state of mind over his plans for a vegetable garden?
f. Why does Naboth refuse Ahab’s offer? What motivates him to turn down Ahab?
2. Read 1 Kings 21v5-16. How would you describe Jezebel’s view of kingship?
3. Read 1 Kings 21v17-29.
a. What message for Ahab did God give Elijah at the end of the story?
b. What was Ahab’s attitude to Elijah, and what does it show?
c. Look at the timing of God’s word to Ahab (v16-18). Why, do you think, God waited until this point?
d. What do you think Ahab’s response to God’s message shows (v27-29)? Was he repentant or not? Why? (skim read 1 Kings 22v1-28 to help).
4. Has there ever been a time when you had to stand up for Justice because you knew God’s word was being broken? How did you feel? How did it go? Would you do it again?
