SMALL GROUP DISCUSSION QUESTIONS

TEXT: 1 Kings 19  THE ELIJAH SERIES

1. Can you think of a time in your life when a high point was followed by a low point?

2. Read 1 Kings 18v36-46. Summarise all the things that would have made this point in Elijah’s life the pinnacle of his ministry so far.

3. Read 1 Kings 19v1-9. What happens to Elijah next, and how does he respond?

   a. Do you think Elijah was disappointed? Why?

   b. What details reveal his state of mind?

   c. What are the first actions God took to help his prophet overcome this depressed feeling? (v5-9) What does this show about God’s care for his people?

4. Read 1 Kings 19v9-21.

   a.     Why does God ask Elijah the question in v9 and v13?

   b.     What does Elijah’s answer (v10 and v14) reveal about his thinking?

   c.     In what way does God chose to reveal his presence to Elijah?

   d.     What is Elijah being taught?

   e.     What is God’s plan for Elijah from now on?

5. Can we learn anything from God’s dealings with Elijah about how to help godly Christians who are feeling low?
