SMALL GROUP DISCUSSION QUESTIONS
TEXT: 1 Kings 18v1-39 THE ELIJAH SERIES

1. Share some situations in which you have had to stand alone as a Christian. What helped you stand firm? What was the outcome?
2. Read 18v1,2 and v15-19. Elijah meets with King Ahab. Imagine how this meeting went! What did they say to each other? What was Elijah’s demand?
3. Read 18v20,21. Elijah stands before the people of Israel.
a. What did Elijah challenge them to do, and what was the big thing he wanted them to know?
b. How complete was Israel’s rejection of God?
c. What is Jesus’ warning to us in Matthew 6v24?
4. Read 18v22-39
a. How did the prophets of Baal try to get the attention of their god? (See v26 & 28)
b. What do you think was their strategy, and what does this show about their relationship with Baal?
c. How did Elijah respond to the Baal-worshippers’ attempts to persuade their god to produce fire? What was he showing Israel?
d. What did Elijah do? In v30? In v31? In v32-35? In v36,37?
e. How did God respond?
f. What does this event show us about what God is like?
5. The words of Jesus in Matthew 6v5-8 contrast two ways of praying. What do you learn about prayer from these verses?
