SMALL GROUP DISCUSSION QUESTIONS
TEXT: 1 Kings 16v29 – 17v24 THE ELIJAH SERIES

1. Read 1 Kings 16v29-34 and remind yourselves of the state of the nation at the time Elijah lived
2. Read 17v1. Elijah brings Ahab a message from the LORD.
a. As he speaks, what do we learn about (a) Elijah’s convictions about God (b) Elijah’s understanding of himself?
b. By what authority could Elijah speak like this? (Deut. 11v16,17)
3. Read 17v2-6
a. What is surprising about God’s instruction to Elijah?
b. What do you think Elijah learned about God in the Kerith Ravine? What would he learn when the brook dried up?
4. Read 17v7-24
a. What does God reveal about himself in Sidon, by providing food for Elijah, the widow and her son?
b. What does God reveal about himself by raising the widow’s son to life again?
c. What light does Jesus shed on these events in Luke 4v14-30
5. Apply. Think about the experience of Elijah, when God took him out of the limelight and sent him far away into the wilds. What can we learn through such experiences about:
a. God’s priority for our lives?
b. God’s provision?
c. God’s purposes in what he does and doesn’t give us?
